The primary objective of the project is to create a landscape design that integrates with Gaziantep’s historic urban fabric, to make effective use of the vacant areas surrounding the Historic Gümrük Han and the Historic Yeni Han, and to reintegrate these historic buildings into the urban context. For this purpose, architectural landscape, planting, irrigation, and lighting projects were prepared for the 1,082 m² area on Gümrük Street facing the Historic Gümrük Han, together with an additional 400 m² area located in front of the Historic Yeni Han.
Within the larger project area facing Gümrük Han, the site descends from the street through three successive levels. The first level, extending from the road to the stairs, is situated at an elevation of 842.75 metres. The second level, containing the seating areas beneath the pergolas, is situated at an elevation of 842.60 metres. The third and lowest level, where the pool and flower beds are located, is situated at an elevation of 842.45 metres.
Access from the upper street level to the lower level is provided by a two-step staircase. In addition, two accessible ramps have been positioned symmetrically at either end of the staircase. Seating and relaxation areas have been created in the corners facing Gümrük Han by means of timber pergolas supported by steel structures. These spaces can be accessed from either the upper or lower level by a single step.
Visual variety has been introduced within the two symmetrically arranged planting areas facing the street through the use of pyramidal evergreen species. A flower bed has been placed between these two areas, creating an attractive focal point that can be perceived from the upper level.
With the exception of the street-facing side, the entire area is surrounded by a planted strip measuring 1 metre in width and 40 centimetres in height. This strip is planted with clipped boxwood shrubs. Climbing plant species have also been proposed for the stone wall facing Gümrük Han. At this point, the total height of the wall above ground level, including the planted area, is 2.4 metres.
In front of the planted strip, a total of 16 basalt seating units, each measuring 150 centimetres in length and 40 centimetres in height, have been installed. Six of these units are positioned on the upper level, three on each side, while the remaining ten are located on the lower level.
All hard-surfaced areas will be paved with basalt stone slabs measuring 5 centimetres in thickness. At the exact centre of the lower level, a cubic water feature composed of basalt cobblestones, with dimensions varying between 1.5 metres and 40 centimetres, has been placed together with smaller basalt seating units arranged around it.
