Gümrük Avenue – Şahinbey / Gaziantep

This landscape design project focuses on the redevelopment of public open spaces surrounding the Historic Customs Inn and the Historic Yeni Han, located in the historic city center of Gaziantep. The design proposes a functional and aesthetically cohesive open-space arrangement that integrates the historic structures with urban life, meets users’ needs for relaxation and social interaction, and enhances the visual identity of the historic environment.

Within the scope of the study, the open spaces surrounding the Historic Gümrük Han and the Historic Yeni Han were evaluated in terms of pedestrian circulation, level relationships, existing vegetation, user needs, and their spatial relationship with the historic buildings. The potential of the area was analysed to establish a basis for design decisions that enhance the visibility of the historic structures, improve accessibility, and strengthen public use.

The design approach is based on an integrated urban design concept that transforms the open spaces surrounding the historic hans into active components of urban life. Seating areas at different levels created through terracing, pergolas, a water feature, and planting arrangements have been proposed to provide public spaces where users can rest and socialize. While basalt paving, a restrained planting design, and low-level lighting elements emphasize the architectural character of the historic setting, a contemporary landscape design has been developed to enhance the area’s aesthetic coherence and user comfort.
