Mengücek Valley – Divrigi / Sivas

This project proposes a comprehensive cultural landscape design for the bazaar district in Divriği’s historic city centre, the Divriği Great Mosque and Hospital, Divriği Castle, and the relationships between the open spaces connecting these areas. The primary aim of the study is to strengthen spatial continuity between the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the historic urban fabric, enhance the visitor experience, and develop a sustainable open-space system that contributes to the conservation of cultural heritage.

Within the scope of the study, pedestrian connections, topography, public open spaces, the historic fabric, and natural landscape features were analysed along the valley extending from the historic bazaar to the Çaltı River. By evaluating the cultural values of the area, existing patterns of use, and spatial continuity, conservation priorities were identified, and spatial opportunities were revealed for improving open spaces integrated with the historic environment and supporting visitor use.

The design approach addresses the cultural landscape components of the historic city centre through an integrated conservation perspective. Pedestrian connections, resting and viewing areas, and spaces for cultural activities have been proposed to strengthen spatial continuity between the historic bazaar, the Divriği Great Mosque, and Divriği Castle. The developed landscape proposals include spatial interventions that preserve the distinctive character of the historic environment while increasing the visibility of cultural heritage, enhancing the visitor experience, and promoting the sustainable use of public open spaces.
